Beta-sitosterol
Beta-sitosterol is one of hundreds of plant-derived 'sterol' compounds (including sterols and sterolins) that are structurally similar to the cholesterol made in our bodies. A growing body of scientific evidence has shown the average American male requires at least 600mg of beta-sitosterol per day. The American diet simply does not contain near enough of this amount leaving 98% of American males nutritionally deficient. It's many uses include helping to maintain normal cholesterol, promotion of prostate health and helping to balance blood sugar levels. It has also effective in slowing male pattern baldness.
Beta-sitosterol is shown to lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of colon cancer and prostate cancer. Several clinical trials demonstrate its relief of symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), such as waking up many times at night to urinate.
Recent studies indicate that Beta-Sitosterol can be extremely helpful for men with symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). A 1999 review of four clinical trials involving 519 men with mild to moderate BPH found that beta-sitosterol provided noticeable relief from urinary problems. It also increased urine flow and caused few side effects. Interestingly, benefits matched those commonly seen with prescription BPH drugs.
Phytosterols
Phytosterols are natural components of many vegetables and grains. Plant phytosterols help to support cholesterol wellness when consumed as part of a low cholesterol dietary program. The three main phytosterols in
ProstaLife ™ are beta-sitosterol, campesterol, and stigmasterol. They are natural, safe, and derived entirely from plant sources.
Beta Sitosterol is one of the most abundant plant sterols available in nature. Recent scientific studies document the ability of sterols to benefit heart, nutritional and prostate health. Plant sterols help maintain cholesterol levels that are already within normal range.
Numerous Clinical Studies of Beta Sitosterol Established the Following Benefits:
- Promotes a Healthy Immune system, especially during stress.
- Promotes Allergy Relief
- Reduces prostate cancer, breast, colon and pancreatic cancer risk
- Reduces Anti-inflammatory and Pain activity
- Relieves symptoms of enlarge prostate (prostatitis)
Nettle Extract
Nettle is a natural herb that has been used since ancient times to nourish the urinary tract. In men, the herb has been very helpful in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and has long been used as a diuretic, it cleanses the entire system by promoting the flow of urine and also aids kidney and bladder function. The herb is also used to expel gravel from the bladder, flush toxins from the system and combat urinary infections. Nettle is a natural way to help maintain a healthy urinary tract and flush toxins from your system.
Pumpkin-seed
Pumpkin-seed is a natural supplement rich with antioxidants and polyunsaturated fatty acids. The content of vitamin E, especially gamma-tocopherol, is very high in pumpkin seed oil. The oil content of the pumpkin seed is about 50%. The four dominant fatty acids are palmitic, stearic, oleic and linoleic acids. These four fatty acids make up 98 % of the total amount of fatty acids.
Lycopene
Lycopene is primarily derived from tomatoes and has recently been shown in several human clinical trials to show benefits against benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). In a recent German trial all of the participants had reduced PSA scores, there was no increase in the size of the prostate. 'Symptoms of the disease, as assessed via the International Prostate Symptom Score questionnaire, were improved in both groups with a significantly greater effect in men taking lycopene supplements,' wrote the researchers. 'In conclusion, lycopene inhibited progression of BPH.' Zinc Aspartate
ZINC ASPARTATE helps the prostate in a variety of ways. The prostate contains a higher concentration of zinc than any other organ in the body. The hormone prolactin increases testosterone absorption by the prostate. Excess testosterone stimulation is known to increase the risk of prostate disorders (benign and malignant). Zinc inhibits the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. This enzyme converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, the form of testosterone thought to be most responsible for benign proliferative changes to the prostate gland. Zinc supplementation has been shown to reduce the size and symptoms of benign prostate disorders in a majority of patients.
Pygeum Africanum
- Pygeum helps prevent and reverse BPH
- Reduces inflammation
- Reduces prostate size
- Promotes normal urination
- Rids the prostate of cholesterol deposits that can occur with BPH
- Significantly ameliorates the uncomfortable symptoms associated with BPH including frequent urination and abdominal heaviness
Pygeum africanum is an evergreen tree that grows in the mountainous forests of Africa. European doctors have been prescribing this bark extract for years to help preserve prostate health and promote a man's overall well being. In fact, in France and other countries, phytotherapeutic preparations (nutritional compounds derived from plants) such as Pygeum are the most widely used drugs for the treatment of BPH. In Asia, Africa, and India, phytotherapeutic medicine is considered a first-line treatment for BPH and has been utilized effectively for centuries.
The powdered bark was traditionally used as a tea for relief of bladder and urinary disorders. The investigative work that European scientists did in determining the active constituents in the bark led to the development of the modern lipophilic (fat soluble) extracts used today. Thanks to the hundreds of studies that have been done in the past thirty years, we know that Pygeum is highly effective in helping to maintain a healthy prostate.
Active Ingredients Pygeum contains three active compounds that aid prostate health:
- Pentacyclic triterpenoids (ursolic and oleanic acids) help inhibit inflammation, reduce swelling of the prostate, and increase the integrity of small veins and capillaries.
- Phystosterols (beta-sitosterol) act as an anti-inflammatory. Beta-sitosterol has also been shown to reduce the normally elevated levels of prostaglandins in patients with BPH.
- Ferulic esters (docosanol and tetracosanol) help rid the prostate of any cholesterol deposits that typically accompany prostate enlargement.
Recently, numerous clinical trials have demonstrated the usefulness of Pygeum for BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia), including reduction of the frequency of nighttime urination,6 and the relief of other symptoms associated with BPH.
Saw Palmetto
Saw palmetto has long been used in Europe to treat an enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). American use lags far behind Europe in part because Americans are not aware of the extensive European research on the herb, some of which is presented here. The most cited journal article is an early (1984) 'letter to the editors' by G. Champault et al. American physicians generally don't prescribe any drug other than Finasteride (Proscar®), Terazosin HCI (Hytrin®), or Doxazosin mesylate (Cardura®) for BPH. But unlike these drugs, particularly Proscar®, saw palmetto usually kicks in quickly. With the saw palmetto extract most men achieve some relief of symptoms within the first 30 days.
A long-term study of 150 men with clinically diagnosed BPH and complaints of prostatic symptoms has demonstrated 'the long-term efficacy and tolerability of saw palmetto extracts and support its use as a first-line medical therapy for uncomplicated symptomatic BPH.' The abstract of this study conducted by the Scientific Research Institute of Urology, Moscow, Russia, appeared in the November-December 2002 issue of Advances in Therapy.
The study's conclusions are impressive: At 6, 12, 18, and 24 months, the International Prostate Symptom Score (I-PSS), quality of life, and sexual function score were recorded, and urodynamics and biologic values were measured. Adverse events were recorded every 3 months. I-PSS and quality of life improved significantly from baseline at each evaluation time point. At the end of the study and at each evaluation, maximum urinary flow also improved significantly. Prostate size decreased. Sexual function remained stable during the first year of treatment and significantly improved (P = .001) during the second year. Prostate-specific antigen was not affected, and no changes in plasma hormone levels were observed. Nine patients reported 10 adverse events, none related to treatment. Improvements in efficacy parameters began at 6 months and were maintained up to 24 months.
